Due diligence is the process involving either an investigation of a business or person prior to signing a contract. It can be a legal obligation, but the term will more commonly apply to voluntary investigations. A common example of due diligence in various industries is the process through which a potential acquirer evaluates a target company or its assets for acquisition.

Forensic accounting is the specialty practice area of accounting that involves engagements that result from actual or anticipated disputes or litigation. "Forensic" means "suitable for use in a court of law". Forensic services can cover numerous areas including family law matters, insurance claims, fraud, personal injury, proceeds of crime and the provision of expert evidence at a trial.
